About this course

Improvise with other musicians.
Create your own melodies.
Develop a 4 bar melodic phrase into a 16 bar piece of music.
Use improvisation to be more creative and expressive in the music pieces you study.
Explain how improvisation can be used in classical music.

Course programme

We will create musical structures, and textures, and improvise phrases of 4 bars, 8 bars. We will address the history and application of improvisation in classical music.

Most of the course will be playing as a group and individually. There will be some presentation of history and music theory. You may be asked to practise between classes. Bring your instrument, paper and pencil, and any piece of music you are comfortable playing.

More opportunities to study improvisation may come along. This short course is a supplement to the general instrumental programme.
