Emerging life-threatening infections such as SARS and Ebola have highlighted the need for effective and consistent prevention, control and management of infection within healthcare environments. Failure to implement appropriate control and management of infection can lead to the increased spread of diseases, which may ultimately lead to the loss of life and increased burden on health and social care resources.

Using the chain of infection as a guide, this module will adopt a holistic approach to infection prevention and control (IPC) in 21st century health and social care. Healthcare-associated infections are major causers of morbidity and mortality, however this module will also cover common microorganisms and their pathogenesis. Emerging tropical diseases, pandemics, epidemics and endemics will also be discussed.

You will learn about the causes of infection and pre-disposing conditions increasing susceptibility, but also challenge existing legislation, auditing and surveillance techniques to bring about effective management and control of outbreaks in a diverse range of contexts.

About this course

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

Critically appraise existing knowledge and understanding of infection prevention and control
Critically analyse the need for strict infection prevention and control within any care environment
Examine current and future issues and debates around infectious diseases, epidemiology, prevalence and morbidity

The module is suitable for all health and social care professionals with an interest in infection prevention and control.

Be able to provide evidence of previous study at Level 5 or above in a related subject area including but not limited to health and social care, social work, health promotion or youth work
Be a health care professional with access to an environment where you will be able to apply your skills to achieve the individual module learning outcomes. This does not specifically need to be employment and could include voluntary work

Offset module credits towards BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Top-Up)
If you are a registered nurse but do not have a degree qualification, once you’ve completed this module you could offset the 20 credits through recognised prior learning (RPL) towards our online BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (Top-Up) degree. This would reduce the number of modules you would need to study and the total cost of the course.

Alternatively, if you are a health and social care practitioner you may wish to offset the 20 credits by progressing to the online BSc (Hons) Integrative Health and Social Care (Top-Up) degree.
