Course programme

International Baccalaureate (Group 2) Ab Initio Italian, Standard Level
This course will enable you to communicate effectively in a range of everyday situations and develop your awareness of the culture of Italian speaking countries.

What does the course consist of?
This will allow you to deal with straightforward transactional tasks, such as booking a hotel room, ordering a meal in a restaurant, but also to exchange information about self, home and area, and express opinions about a range of topics.
Over the two years you will develop a range of reading techniques for detailed understanding of texts, as well as knowledge of different types of texts for written tasks. Grammar acquisition will form an integral part of the course and will be taught for the most part in context.
In year 2 you will strengthen your knowledge of each topic area and grammar. For example you will move from being able to exchange simple information to writing a formal letter or preparing a short report for a magazine on an environmental issue.
Students will be encouraged to develop links with other students in the Italian speaking world via e-mail, exchanges or visits abroad. The course will not only aim to develop their language skills, but also raise awareness of the cultural diversity experienced in daily life, such as food, festivals, current affairs, etc

What else do I need to know?
The subject is assessed via an external assessment (70%) and an internal assessment (30%). The external component will test students' ability to understand a range of texts and respond appropriately in the target language using a wide variety of techniques. The written tasks will require students to use specific types of texts.
