Course programme

International Baccalaureate (Group 6) Music Higher and Standard Level
What does the course consist of?
The Music course at Higher level consists of four interdependent components:
  • Musical Perception and analysis:
study of a prescribed work and the study of musical genres and styles. This includes a Listening paper in the assessment
  • Musical Investigation:
an independent investigation into the relationship between two identifiable and distinct musical genres from any tradition
  • Solo Performance:
    one or more solo recitals
  • Composition:
3 notated compositions, a recording and a written statement that describes the creative and refining process

At Standard level, the Musical Perception and Analysis and the Musical Investigation are the same as at Higher Level. There is an option to perform in a group instead of solo. Two compositions are required instead of three.
The Music IB is taught in the first year with the AS Music class.
