Course programme
This practical course provides a foundation for anyone wanting to learn the basics of helping skills which will be useful in a variety of settings e.g. within the family, in volunteering, mentoring, teaching, youth work healthcare, social work, management etc. It is designed for people with little or no prior experience of counselling skills. Also, to be able to work effectively with others, we need to develop self-awareness and get to know ourselves better in a safe, supportive, comfortable learning environment.
The course provides an opportunity to consider what is counselling and what are counselling skills, commencing with an overview of active listening skills. Listening is a skill at the heart of counselling and essential in building healthy relationships.
Recent developments in counselling skills will be covered such as counselling by e-mail, looking at organisations which offer this facility e.g. The Samaritans and ChildLine.
