    Short course

  • Methodology

    Inhouse

  • Duration

    1 Day

The main approaches to fatigue design will be outlined with an emphasis on the ways in which these approaches relate to the fundamental physical aspects of fatigue and to the requirements of different areas of engineering application. Suitable for: The course is aimed at design engineers seeking a sound understanding of the different design approaches supported by modern software, and at materials technologists seeking an appreciation of the ways in which different approaches to testing relate to the requirements of the design community.

Colin Davies

Course Manager

Through project work and failure investigations covering a wide range of metal using industries (including mining, shipbuilding, civil and structural engineering, aerospace and renewable energy devices) he has gained a sound understanding of structures and their failure mechanisms, and in particular the role of fatigue. He has previously lectured on aspects of metallurgical failure investigations for the IoM3. He is currently a Senior Technologist in the Structural Integrity group of Transport Applications Department at Corus RD&T.

Course programme

This is a one day workshop intended as an initial grounding in fatigue design approaches and testing methods. The main approaches to fatigue design will be outlined with an emphasis on the ways in which these approaches relate to the fundamental physical aspects of fatigue and to the requirements of different areas of engineering application. Attendance on this is useful preparation for the Introduction to the Strain Life Approach to Fatigue Design and the Introduction to the Fracture Mechanics Approach to Fatigue Design.

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • Introduction to Fatigue as a failure mode.
  • Fatigue Loading
  • Workshop: Cycle Counting
  • Fatigue Design using S-N curves-Miner's Rule
  • Workshop: Simple fatigue life assessment
  • Design using S-N curves - Welded Connections
  • Fracture Mechanics Approach
  • Strain Life Approach
