This course is about learning to use a sketchbook to gather visual material in relation to the social history of a place. Through group discussions, presentations and individual tutoring you will be developing your own research about a specific location and explore different ways of working with social history as an artist. The course will include an off site visit to a historic London location where you will gather material and ideas to be explored in the studio. You will be using drawing, photography, collage and mixed media techniques.

About this course
- Investigate, research and take inspiration from a real location as a starting point for making work.
- Explore social history and discover how other artists have dealt with social history and place in their work.
- Gain confidence in making and recording visual notes in a public place.
- Build up a sketchbook for research, using a variety of methods for gathering information.
For the studio sessions all materials are provided.
For the one off-site session you will need to bring an A4 (minimum size) sketchbook, and may like to bring any extra optional drawing materials, such as coloured drawing materials or a camera.

Talks, practical work, demonstrations, hand outs, individual tutoring, group exercises and group discussions. There will be a one off-site visit included in the course.

Course programme
This course approaches the sketchbook as a work in itself as well as the potential starting point for a range of new works. You will learn different methods of gathering visual information as well as reflecting on the structure and composition of the sketchbook as a whole. We will be using drawing, photography, collage and mixed media techniques. We will also look at how contemporary artists have dealt with social history and place.
