They are important in your future career because they enable you to be flexible in whatever kind of work you do. Employers are increasingly interested in Key Skills.

They are important in your personal life because they can help you to organise yourself, handle information and work and communicate with others.

Which Key Skills will I develop?
At College you will have the opportunity to work towards Key Skills qualifications in:
  • Communication
  • Information Technology
To achieve these qualifications you will have to pass an external test in each skill. The College will prepare you for these tests. You will also have
  • to demonstrate you have these skills through a portfolio of evidence that will be collected from your activities at College.
What Level of Key Skills will I be aiming at and what sort of activity will it involve?
The College will be entering students for Key Skills at Levels 2 and 3.

As you move up the levels you are expected to take more responsibility for decisions on how to use your skills to suit different tasks, problems and situations.

Examples of the sorts of skills you will develop:
  • Communication:
  • Participating in group discussions
  • Making a presentation
  • Reading and synthesising information
  • Writing documents
  • Information Technology:
  • Compare the advantages and limitations of using different IT sources
  • Use automated routines
  • Develop and refine the presentation of text, images and numbers
