Course programme

Course Overview
This course is aimed at those with little or no prior experience, who are considering a career in the construction industry.
The course provides the learner with an excellent introduction to the occupational areas within the construction industry. It offers the candidate an opportunity to sample different occupational areas and aims to help the learner decide whether to progress with further training &/or employment within a particular area of construction.
The qualification also promotes the development of wider employability skills including:
  • emphasising the importance of appropriate conduct & dress within a work area
  • customer service/customer care
  • safe working practices
Course Structure
This is a one year course with attendance at college for 2.5 days per week.
Some of the topics to be covered include:
  • Promote work related skills within the construction industries
  • Development of generic employability skills
  • Prepare learners for further training within construction
  • Provide an insight into core activities
In order to achieve the qualification, learners must achieve a set number of credits from the following:
  • 4 mandatory units
  • Optional units: Carry out electrical installations, Carry out wood operations, Carry out trowel operations

Qualification Aims
Successful candidates will achieve:
ASCENTIS Level 1 Certificate in Preparation for Employment in the Construction Industry.
Candidates will also be given the opportunity to achieve the following (all e-learning programmes):
  • L1 Health & Safety
  • L1 Healthy Living
  • L1 Environmental Sustainability

As part of the mandatory requirements for the Foundation Learning Tier, candidates will also study Functional Skills: Maths, English & IT

Cost / Equipment
Tuition is free to those aged 16-18 years
Free tuition is also available to those aged over 19 in receipt of certain benefits or to their unwaged dependants.

  • PPE - Hard Boots
