This practical course for intermediate pianists at ABRSM Grade 4 standard or higher will introduce you to the dynamic role of the piano in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music. The course will focus on rhythm, playing different Latin piano styles and soloing. You will play digital pianos and percussion in class in order to experience playing in a Latin music ensemble.

About this course

- Understand the function of the piano in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music and learn how to play in these styles.
- Be familiar with the some of the different Latin music styles and be able to distinguish amongst them including Son, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Bolero and Bossa Nova.
- Solo in these styles of music with some basic competence incorporating different harmonic and rhythmic approaches.
- Have a better understanding of how to improve your music reading in this style including exercises to help you with this.

A notebook and some manuscript paper. You may wish to audio record parts of the session.

You will be taught through practical playing sessions on the keyboards provided receiving direct feedback from the tutor as well as listening to musical examples. You will be set various rhythmic and harmonic exercises to help you play in this style and you will be provided with backing tracks with which to practise outside of the class.

Introduction to Salsa, Son Montuno, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha and Bolero and Afro-Brazillian piano styles and aproaches to soloing in these styles.
Montunos and how to play them including common variations.
The different percussion instruments used in Salsa (congas, bongos,clave, guiro and cowbells and their associated rhythms/patterns as well as percussion instruments used in Afro-Brazillian music.

Additional information

Latin piano 2 is offered later in the year. There are a range of Pop, Jazz and Classical piano courses, as well as Latin percussion, and Afro Cuban ensemble. You may also be interetsed in Township tunes, Play world pop music.
