Why should I study Leisure & Tourism Applied GCSE?
The GCSE in Leisure & Tourism is intended to provide students with an introduction to the leisure and tourism industry, enabling them to learn in a more practical way.

What will I study?
Unit 1:
Investigating Leisure and Tourism
  • Develop an understanding of how leisure and tourism organisations operate as businesses
  • Acquire knowledge and understanding of UK travel and tourism activities and destinations
  • Develop an understanding of how people spend their leisure time


Unit 2:
Marketing in Leisure and Tourism
  • Develop an understanding of how the leisure industry meets people's needs
  • Develop an understanding of why people travel and how the tourism industry meets their needs
  • Develop an understanding of how leisure and tourism organisations market the products and services they offer


Unit 3:
Customer Service in Leisure and Tourism
  • Develop an understanding of employment possibilities in leisure and tourism
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of customer service in leisure and tourism organisations


What skills do I need?
You should have good written communication skills and be willing to progress your IT skills.

How will I be taught?
You will be taught through a variety of teaching methods such as visits, role-play and visiting speakers. Much of the course is practical to reflect its vocational nature. Educational visits are an essential part of the course and every year a programme of trips is scheduled. Past trips include: Alton Towers, Lincoln University, Leeds City Centre and Doncaster Dome.

How is the course assessed?
There are two modules assessed by portfolio which will include role play, presentations, observations, discussions and written work.

A third Module will be externally assessed.

What will this course prepare me for?
Careers in the leisure and tourism industry at a trainee level (leisure centre, sports and fitness companies, travel agencies), or you can progress to AVCE Travel & Tourism or other advanced courses.

Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
