The course consists of 3 units completed over a year. They are:

Mandatory Units

Unit 1: Investigating Business

You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the structure and forms of the ownership of businesses and explore the concepts of stakeholder involvement, change and competition.

Unit 4: Communication in Business

You will be able to understand and demonstrate practical skills in the use of IT based and non-IT based verbal and written communication methods in a business context.

Methods of Teaching

The course includes a variety of teaching methods; work is carried out both through individual exercises, case studies and also through group activities. Opportunities for learning will also come from visits to related areas whilst speakers are arranged to help you gather relevant material. The main emphasis during the course will be on developing your independent learning skills and carrying out your own research.

In addition to classroom teaching and visits, a work experience placement with a local company will be an integral part of the course. This will enable you to develop skills and knowledge in a vocational setting and familiarise you with the world of work.

Methods and Patterns of Assessment

All units are assessed internally by your teachers and moderated by the examining board (OCR). There are no timetabled exams for this qualification. The full award and units from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction.

Financial Implications

Students will be asked to make a voluntary contribution towards educational visits. There are 3-4 day trip opportunities per year €" approximate cost of £10 - £15 each.

Students may also need to pay for transport to any work experience placement although every effort is made to place students close to home or college.

The college has a Student Support Fund for those students who have difficulty meeting these costs.

Career Possibilities

If you achieve at least a Merit grade and grade C in Maths and English Language, you may be able to progress to a Level 3 course or you may wish to enter employment in areas such as administration and retailing.
