BTEC First Diploma - One-year course
This is a course aimed at students who are sure that they want to work with children in the 0-16 years age group. Students will study a range of areas relating to the care, development, and education of children, e.g. childcare practice, child development, children's activities and play. They will also consider their own personal development and the qualities needed to be a childcare worker.
Students will build up a portfolio of work from assignments throughout the year. Assessment tasks will be varied, e.g. projects, presentations, timed assessments.
An important part of the course is work experience and many assignments will be integrated with this. Students will spend one day a week at a placement plus two, three-week block placements during the year. This could be in a nursery, infant school or other appropriate setting. This is an assessed element of the course and students are required to pass the unit as part of the qualification.
Careers and Further Studies
Completion of this course at a high level will enable students to progress to an Advanced Level course in Early Years or the NVQ Children's Care Learning and Development. They may alternatively be able to gain employment in a childcare setting but will need to undertake further training whilst working in order to gain a licence to practice.
General Entry Requirements
At least two GCSEs at grade D or above or a BTEC Introductory Diploma (or equivalent) in a related area at Merit level.
