Suitable for: This course is suitable for people of any age or background that are interested in a full time 2 year course. A strong interest in animal health and welfare is required. The entry requirements for this course are 4 GCSE's at grade C or above or a Level 2 Animal care qualification with a final grade of a Merit or higher. Please contact us if you have any other qualfications or extensive work experience in the land based sector as this can also be used, if the formal entry requirements have not been met.

Course review:

The Level 3 Extended Diploma gives you the knowledge to obtain employment within the Animal Care industry or progression in to University to study a foundation degree or full degree.

You will work with a range of animals at our specialist animal facility in Bradford. These include small mammals, birds, poultry, reptiles, invertebrates and fish. you will learn about the care, feeding, accommodation, behaviour, handling and grooming of all the species that we house.

The level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A level's and is a 2 year full time course, the subjects that are taught on the Level 3 Extended Diploma are:

  • Understand and promote animal health
  • Manage animal accommodation
  • Understand animal anatomy and physiology
  • Plan and monitor animal feeding
  • Understand the principles of animal biology
  • Undertake animal handling and safe working
  • Undertake and review work related experience in the land-based industries
  • Undertake an investigative project in the land-based sector
  • Understand and interpret animal behaviour and communication
  • Understand the principles of animal nursing
  • Understand animal welfare and breed development
  • Undertake dog grooming
  • Understand the principles and carry out the practice of exotic animal health and husbandry
  • Understand the principles of animal nutrition
  • Undertake animal training
  • Understand the principles and carry out the practice of avian health and management
  • Understand the principles of aquatics husbandry and management
  • Understand and carry out farm livestock husbandry

Each one of these modules is assessed by practical and written assessments, that are graded at a Pass, Merit or Distinction. You will compile a portfolio of work for the final grading.
