Local History of Cambridge - not running this term

Your Course
We will look at various aspects of Cambridge local history, concentrating on town rather than gown. We will use a wide range of sources including maps, books, photographs and pictures. The course has been designed to be extremely visual and hands-on. There will be a strong emphasis on the market place, its activities and regulation and the buildings in the market.
We will discover what central Cambridge looked like in Medieval times, we will find old streets, their names and origins and reconstruct the Medieval Market Place. We will also look at post-Medieval development.

Learning Outcomes
You will have the opportunity to
· discuss aspects of Cambridge Local History
· look at source materials
· compare what you see now with lost Cambridge
· take an in-depth look at the central market

Your Tutor
Nick Wise is a member of the CAS (Cambridge Antiquarian Society) and has contributed to its proceedings "A reconstruction of the Medieval Cambridge Market Place" and "New Town - a Victorian Microcosm" and has lectured in and around Cambridge. Nick is currently editing an Encyclopaedia of Cambridge Place Names.

Tuition fees: £45

Method of payment: Fees for short courses (10 weeks or less) to be paid in full at enrolment and for long courses (12 weeks or more) fees of 50% can be paid at enrolment plus 50% as a cheque. Course places cannot be reserved without receipt of both payments.

Please note that there are no classes during half term Monday 15th - Friday 19th February 2010 unless otherwise stated.
