Overview
This Master’s course in human resource management has been designed primarily to meet the career development needs of human resource (HR) managers, advisers and administrators.

Here at the University of West London, you will be encouraged to take a critical perspective on current theory and practice throughout the course. You will learn to analyse complex problems and to devise creative solutions to those problems – and you’ll develop all the skills you need to conduct research into HRM issues.

The MA course also meets the Advanced Level knowledge requirements of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) for entry into a professional membership grade.

Entry requirements
A 1st or 2nd class honours degree (2:1 and 2:2, upper and lower class) in any discipline.
CIPD level 5 qualifications - with a minimum of 2 years HR or Management experience.
If you are a HR practitioner with at least five years' experience, but do not hold the qualifications mentioned above, we will assess your application on individual merit through an interview and an essay.
International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.5 or above, and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing,...

Human Resource Management in Context
Here you will explore issues such as organisational strategies; internal and external environmental influences on strategy development and the role of HR and HR strategies; globalisation and international forces which shape organisational and HR strategies; and the impact of demographic, social, legal and technological trends, and government policy, on organisational and HR strategies.

Managing People
This module explores:
different organisational forms
management and leadership
concepts of human resource management and development (HRM/D)
HRM/D roles in different organisations
strategic and international perspectives on HRM/D
ethical issues in HRM/D.
It also considers areas of practice including:
managing the employment relationship
recruitment and selection
managing change.
Developing Skills for Management
The main aim of this module is to encourage you to develop a strong sense of self-awareness and of your own strengths and weaknesses as a manager and colleague. You will do this through workshops integrated with work-based learning and keep a reflective portfolio.
The skills you will develop include:
critical thinking and analysis
working with and leading others
decision-making
IT skills
financial skills
self-awareness and reflection.
People Resourcing and Talent Management
This module covers many of the mainstream activities of the HR practitioner, including human resource and talent planning, job design, recruitment and selection, performance appraisal/management and employee release. You and your fellow students may already have experience of these activities, and you will build on this by integrating and critically evaluating theory and practice.
Employment Law
In this module you will learn how to explain and advise on key principles underpinning UK and EU employment law. These include the formation and termination of the employment contract, unfair dismissal, equality legislation, collective employment law and the operation of the employment tribunal system.

Learning and Talent Development
This module will develop a critical understanding of the potential and limitations of the contribution of learning and talent development policies and strategies to formulating and achieving objectives at national, organisational, group and individual levels and will enable the development of intellectual, social, professional and personal skills to perform effectively in associated professional roles.
Dissertation
This involves a piece of self-directed research into an HR issue in your own or a host organisation, written into a report of 15,000 words. A supervisor, allocated to you, will provide advice and feedback throughout the process.
