About this course

Students should have achieved City & Guilds level 2 certificate in a marine engineering or equivalent.

Marine Engineering C&G Certificate Level 3

About the course:
This qualification is appropriate for anyone who is, or wants to be employed in the boatbuilding industry.

This certificate can be taken as part of an apprenticeship for the industry.

Course Content:
Mandatory units are:
  • Safe & Effective Working in a Boat Building Repair Service Environment - This unit is concerned with developing safety awareness and acquiring non-technical skills which are essential to function effectively in the working environment. It covers general health and safety, conduct, interaction with colleagues, communication skills and working effectively.
  • Marine Construction & Components - This unit is concerned with the identification of materials used in marine construction, the interpretation of drawings along with the tools and equipment used. It also covers the identification of ancillary equipment and the ability to recognise marine fittings.

The two recommended units for the Marine Engineering pathway are:
  • Marine Engines & Power Units - The aim of this unit is to equip you with the skill, knowledge and understanding needed to carry out diagnosis, removal, rectification, refitting and evaluation activities associated with Marine Engines and Power Units.
  • Marine Propulsion Systems - The aim of this unit is intended to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to carry out diagnosis and rectification associated with marine propulsion systems.


Equipment Requirements:
All equipment will be provided by the college. Students will however need to provide their own work-boots and overalls.

Assessment:
The assessment for this course is a mixture of online tests, practical and written assignments.

Progression:
Upon successful completion of the Level 3 qualification students can progress onto the BTEC Higher National Diploma.
