About this course

You will be able to identify the eclectic mix of gardens and landscapes were being created in the early 19th, what motivated their creators and how they relate to the political, social and cultural context of the period.

Course programme

The ideas and practice of a series of garden writers, designers and patrons including John Claudius Loudon and his wife Jane Loudon, Joseph Paxton, George Glenny and Shirley Hibberd. Changing garden technology. Plant hunting and new plant introductions. The rise of the amateur gardener.

A morning visit is planned to the Lindley Library to look at original Victorian books and magazines.. They ask for a voluntary donation of £3. A visit is also planned to Crystal Palace Park which is free but you will need to pay for public transport there.
