Research has shown, however, that MBSR courses are of particular help to people suffering from stress, anxiety, panic states, depression, hypertension, insomnia, chronic illness and pain. More specifically the evidence base has also revealed it to be particularly effective in the following conditions: fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, cancer and health-care-provider self-care. MBSR Courses can help us develop greater awareness of the way the mind works, and learn how to cultivate new and effective ways of handling challenging feelings and physical sensations. Rewatha Thero

Mindfulness Teacher

Rewatha Thero (or Bhante as he is more commonly known) is a Theravada Buddhist monk who has been practising and teaching Mindfulness meditation techniques for 30 years both in Sri Lanka and the UK. He set up the first Mindfulness meditation centre in Scotland in 2003 in Maryhill, Glasgow, where he has been running Mindfulness based meditation classes ever since. He is currently conducting research about Mindfulness practice at the University of Bangor where he has recently completed the first year of his MSC in Mindfulness approaches in education and health care, as well as obtaining his postgraduate qualification in education (PGDE). He also has a BA in Indian philosophy and the Sanskrit language and an MA in Buddhist philosophy, which he currently teaches at Glasgow University. As well as running various charities in Scotland and abroad, in 2010 he launched the UK's first ever Buddhist college, to be based in Glasgow. Bhante has considerable experience of teaching Mindfulness to the secular western world in both public and corporate contexts.

MBSR Course 1 - For Pregnancy/Mums

  • Tuesday 8 February, 9.15-11.15: (Free) Orientation Session available to anyone interested in finding out more about MBSR courses
  • Monday 14 February - 4 April, 9.15-11.15: Eight-week course. One day retreat (Date TBC with group)

MBSR Course 2

  • Saturday 12 February, 1030-1230: (Free) Orientation Session available to anyone who is interested in finding out more about MBSR courses
  • Saturday 19 February - 9 April: 1030-12.30 Eight-week course. One day retreat (Date TBC with group)

MBSR Course 3

  • Wednesday 9 February, 7.00-9.00: (Free) Orientation Session available to anyone who is interested in finding out more about MBSR courses
  • Wednesday 16 February - 6 April: 7.00-9.00 Eight-week course. One day retreat (Date TBC with group)

Eight-week courses can also be provided on request and we are happy to travel to locations outwith Glasgow for groups of six or more.

Mindfulness Meditation Monthly Retreats

Mindfulness Today will be offering a monthly one-day retreat on the last Sunday of every month.

This day is open to anyone interested in learning new mindfulness meditation techniques or maintaining/developing further mindfulness meditation practice.

Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket/yoga mat if required. We will provide tea and coffee but please bring along a small vegetarian dish/sandwich/salad/cake which you may wish to share with the group. Cost: £30

One-to-One Sessions

One-to-one sessions are available in Mindfulness Meditation, MBSR or Mindfulness Counseling on request.

Distance Learning

If you can't find an MBSR course near to you or feel that a one-to-one session is not practical at this time, Mindfulness Today offer a distance learning option comprising of 9 x 45 minute phone tutorials.

Stress In the Work-place

As Mindfulness practices have been internationally approved for the treatment of stress and anxiety, many organizations and companies are looking to introduce these practices into their workplace.

Stress has consistently been the second most commonly reported type of work-related illness. In fact in 2009/10, an estimated 9.8 million working days were lost through work-related stress and on average, each person suffering from stress in the work-place took an estimated 22.6 days off sick. We can deliver the following packages to help you combat this 21st Century problem:

  • The eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course, in your workplace or a venue of your choice
  • A series of one-day Mindfulness workshops adapted to the needs of your organization
  • A two-hour introductory lecture/workshop designed to introduce your company to the principles of Mindfulness and learn some basic meditation exercises to help cope with stress in the work place

Continuous Professional Development

Continuous Professional Development Courses are available on request for professionals (in both individual and group settings) who wish to incorporate Mindfulness teaching in their work.

MBSR courses in Glasgow will be held at 1 Caldercuilt Road, Maryhill Park, Maryhill G20 0AD unless otherwise stated.

The cost of each course is £160 which includes the orientation session, eight-weekly two-hour sessions, a day's retreat, two CD's and a course booklet.

Meditation cushions and refreshments will also be provided. Please wear comfortable clothes. You may wish to bring a yoga mat and/or blanket for the lying down exercises, but this is not essential.

There are a limited number of concessions available so please ask for more details.
