What are the Course Details?
This is a full-time Level 2 course in Light Vehicle Repairs & Servicing certificated by the Institute of the Motor Industry.
The course includes theoretical and practical work in the following subjects:
  • Tyres, Brakes, Steering & Suspension Systems & Routine Maintenance
  • Engine Fault Diagnosis & Routine Maintenance
  • Transmission Fault Diagnosis & Routine Maintenance
  • Electrical & Electronic Systems Fault Diagnosis & Maintenance

These activities will be based in the College's well-equipped vehicle repair workshop.
Learners will also study Functional Skills in the following areas:
  • Communication
  • Application of Number
  • IT

This course will suit learners with a keen interest in motor vehicle repairs and maintenance who are looking forward to gaining employment in vehicle maintenance and repair or associated industries.


What are the Entry Requirements?

To be eligible for this course learners should have 4 GCSE's at Grade A*-D, to include Maths and English plus completion of the IMI Technical Award in Motor Vehicle Mechanics. All learners will be treated on individual merit, and final acceptance onto the course is subject to interview.

What will I Learn?
As part of this course learners will gain general motor vehicle workshop experience and study the following units:

  • Positive Working Relationships
  • Routine Vehicle Maintenance
  • Light Vehicle Engine Components
  • Light Vehicle Electrical Units & Components
  • Light Vehicle Chassis Units & Components
  • Light Vehicle Transmission & Drivel Units & Components


How will I Learn?
Learners will attend formal technology classes covering the technical aspects of the operation, maintenance and repair of the motor vehicle. These will be reinforced by practical workshop sessions to help you complete the practical & theoretical assessments.


How will I be Assessed?
Learners' performance will be measured with a combination of written tests, computer based tests and practical assessments.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. Learners will also be able to access Functional Skills in Communication, Application of Number and IT, at a level appropriate to their individual abilities.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience does not form a part of this course although learners will spend significant time in the College workshops.

What can I Progress to?
The aim of the course is to prepare learners for employment in a motor vehicle repair workshop or associated industries. After successfully completing the course and obtaining a work placement, learners may be able to progress to an NVQ.
