About this course
Four GCSE grade C to include Maths and English Language. Employment in the retail motor industry, or an advanced apprenticeship. All students must attend an assessment day.

Aim This is a Level 1 pre-apprenticeship qualification that covers the technical needs for today's motor vehicle repair industry, including basic operating principles, systems operation and foundation skills. It provides essential knowledge for auto-electricians working on vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.
Content It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:
· Operating principles and basic checks on:
· Mechanical components
· Start/charge systems
· Engine electrical systems
· External lighting systems.
Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.
The student's knowledge is assessed by IMI set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, IMI set on-line'multiple-choice testing and by assessments set by the student's centre.
Progression/career opportunities
Level 2 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (Light Vehicle).
Extra information All students will be required to purchase appropriate protective equipment (PPE) including overalls and boots. There is a £60 fee on all motor vehicle courses to cover the cost of your equipment including text books, files, pens, pencils, paper and polo t-shirts to be paid at enrolment.
Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
