About this course

A grade C in GCSE Music and a good knowledge of music theory (Grade 4/5) is required and a student should perform on a musical instrument or sing. A student should be interested in listening to a wide range of music and wish to acquire and improve the essential skills in music. GCE Advanced Level AS/A2

Course Content

Module 1- Performing 1
A solo recital on main instrument or voice and either a performance on a 2nd instrument or in an ensemble, or performing ones own composition. The expected standard is grade 4.

Module 2 - Composition 1
Coursework consisting of one composition and six harmony exercises. The composition can be in any style but for at least 4 instruments.

Module 3 - Introduction to Historical Study
A study of six works, three classical and three jazz. The course includes score reading, essay writing and listening tests.

Module 4 - Performing 2
A recital on one instrument which can focus on an area of special interest. The standard required is grade 6.

Module 5 - Composition 2
Setting of a given text to music and 8 classical harmony exercises. There is also a free composition option or composing music for a few minutes of a film scenario.

Module 6 - Historical & Analytical Studies
This module consists of listening tests and a close study of Programme Music. There are set works such as Vivaldis Seasons and Berliozs Symphonie Fantastique. Score following and essay writing are essential.

How it is Taught
We listen to a wide range of music and examine the techniques used by various composers. Short essays are set after informal listening and discussion and Music software can be used for both composition and improvement of music theory. Most lessons are informal and students can often work on their own. Opportunities are provided to play an instrument or sing in rehearsals and concerts throughout the year. Students are encouraged to integrate all the units so that what is learnt in one area can be practically applied in another.

All exams are taken in June. AS Units 1-3 in June in the first year and A2 units 4-6 in June in the second year.

Music enhances essential skills such as communication, problem solving, creativity, working in a team and building self-confidence. The experiences it offers are valuable in university applications and many of our music students have continued musical studies in Higher Education.

Other Relevant Information
Music is an enjoyable course and harnesses skills that a student may have acquired not only at his/her previous school but also at home. The course is intended to cater for a students preferred musical style but he/she will be expected to explore and appreciate most others.
