The course is 60% practical work using music software, multitrack recorders, microphones, etc. Most lessons will be gaining experience in these areas, which are externally assessed at the end of the year. 10% of the course is analysing in depth one of the pieces used in a coursework task. The remaining 30% is acquiring knowledge of a wide range of musical styles in preparation for a 1 hour 4.

About this course

Have some experience of IT. Interested in Composition & Arranging. Show a willingness to explore the qualities of most styles of music. Reasonable musical keyboard skills are desirable although not essential. Have an understanding of basic music theory and be prepared to extend this knowledge. A grade C in Music is preferred.

Course Content

How it is Taught

AS
  • The course is 60% practical work using music software, multitrack recorders, microphones, etc. Most lessons will be gaining experience in these areas, which are externally assessed at the end of the year.
  • 10% of the course is analysing in depth one of the pieces used in a coursework task.
  • The remaining 30% is acquiring knowledge of a wide range of musical styles in preparation for a 1 hour 45 minute written paper which involves listening to a wide range of recorded music and answering questions.


A2
  • The course is 60% practical work using music software, multitrack recorders, microphones, etc. This work is externally assessed at the end of the year.
  • The remaining 40% of the course is in the form of a 2 hour examination. The exam is in 2 parts; Section A assesses understanding of key musical features and the ability to comment in depth about recorded music. Section B is a practical exam where a piece of music is to be mixed and mastered to a high quality finish.
Examination Details
The Coursework Projects are to be ready by May in the year of the examination.
There is a two hour written paper taken in June.
One hour written paper for classical sequenced piece analysing the work.

Useful/Common Subject Combinations
Music Technology combines well with many other subjects but particularly those using IT. It is particularly useful with other Performing Arts subjects.

Careers and HE Information
Music Technology provides a general qualification route into higher education. This qualification is supported by higher education institutions for either a specialised Music Technology-related course or as part of entry requirements into other subject areas.
