Who is this course for?
This course is designed for anyone who wishes to develop their knowledge of the elements of music and musical notation and follows on from the lower intermediate class It is a very useful preparation for all kinds of music students. Those who attend the Singin, Blues, Harmonica and Drums and Percussion and Music technology classes will find it a useful complement to their learning, while those engaged in private study of any instrument will find that it will help demystify the language of music.
What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Students should possess ABRSM Grade 2 or equivalent or be able to demonstrate that they have such knowledge through a written assessment paper.
What is the level of the course?
Level 2 - Intermediate
What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
The course will cover music theory up to ABRSM grade 5. Learning outcomes including what the student will be able to do:
- Know note value
- Know simple, compound and irregular time signatures
- Know the stave : treble and bass clefs
- Know some frequently used terms and signs
- Know the construction of the major scale
- Know the construction of the harmonic/melodic minor scale
- Know the scales and key signatures of all major and minor keys
Lectures, written and practical exercises, video and audio recordings, internet.
How will we assess your progress on the course?
There will be continuous assessment through exercises set by the tutor. Students will sit ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examinations grade 3, 4 or 5
What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
A Working Men's College Certificate A grade certificate from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music up to a possible Grade 5
What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Students are expected to read recommended reading materials outside of class time. Particularly for Grade 4 and 5 examinations, students are required to put in a substantial amount of work outside the class room. Grade 5 is seen as sufficient musical qualification for some university degree courses.
What can I do after completing this course?
Students can progress to other music course within the college. Students who achieve ABRSM grade 5 on this course will be guaranteed an interview for the Access to Music Higher Education Diploma
Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
You will need manuscript paper, a notebook, pen, pencil and rubber. It is also useful if you have access to some kind of piano keyboard, acoustic or electric. There are also set books that cover the requirements for the ABRSM grades.The examination fee is not included in the course cost. ABRSM fees are published annually. The fees for each grade vary, but are currently set at £20 to £27 for each candidate.
Are there any other requirements?
You are required to attend every lesson on time.
