This course offers an introduction to score reading and musical analysis at a Grade 5+ standard. It will expand and enhance your musicianship, and your understanding, appreciation and performance of musical language, style and structure. This courses is also useful to those who play or sing in ensembles.

About this course

- confidently navigate a wide range of musical scores, understanding repeat signs, clefs and general score layout
- demonstrate developed aural (hearing) skills
- understand broad stylistic features of different style periods
- have developed the practical skills to understand and interpret musical scores from different periods and genres.

Please bring a pencil and eraser for annotating the scores provided by the tutor, and some manuscript paper.

Course programme

- Harmony: dissonance and consonance, modulation etc.
- Rhythm: metre, tempo, rhythmic devices
- Phrasing and form
- Colour, texture and balance.

You will be taught through tutor explanation, listening to live and recorded excerpts, class discussion and practical work in class. There is no homework but you may wish to revisit some topics in your own time to help remember the points raised in class.

Additional information

We recommend: Music Theory Grade 6 or Musicianship 4: aural training and dictation part 1 depending on your previous experience. This course is an excellent introduction to score reading for anyone studying music theory at higher levels (Grade 5 and above. You may wish to progress to higher-level Music Theory classes, Studies in counterpoint, Composition Techniques etc. You may also be interested in City Lit's Music Appreciation courses, or one of our wide variety of practical courses in singing or playing an instrument.
