This performance-oriented course combines technique, context and analysis with business skills, so you can generate work for yourself in the musical theatre industry.

You’ll work with our highly-qualified and experienced staff, along with visiting industry professionals, gaining a high level of support to enable your personal and professional development. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered to prepare you for the full-on schedule of a professional performer, including additional skills classes and corporate performance opportunities.

Alongside this, you’ll gain awareness of the artistic process, and an understanding of the American and European Musical Theatre repertoire in its historical and cultural contexts.

You’ll undertake independent research, investigating past and present musical theatre performances, which will help you create original new performances.

About this course

This course combines practical skills and industry knowledge, while teaching you musical theatre context.

You’ll develop performance skills through weekly classes in acting, singing and dance (ballet, tap and jazz). You’ll contribute to the creation and production of performance, making use of appropriate performance vocabularies, techniques, structures and working methods.

Musical theatre, music, theatre and media industries, community arts and teaching.

Offers are usually made on the basis of a minimum of MMP/CDD or equivalent, preferably in a related area such as the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts or A Level Drama or Theatre Studies. Applications from those studying only two A-levels or alternative qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. An audition is required for this course.

Course programme

· Year 1
We introduce you to the basic building blocks of the subject, including skills workshops, performance, contextual studies and professional studies. You’ll begin to develop as a reflective practitioner and theatre-maker.

· Year 2
We continue to train your core technique, with increasingly sophisticated practical work and focus on your chosen field(s) of specialisation. You’ll work as an active member of a theatre company to create your own performance project, and also undertake a practical research project through a professional work placement.

Course assessment

This course is assessed through performances, written and practical portfolios, and essays.
