Introduction

The NCFE Entry Level Certificate in Adult Numeracy has been accredited by the qualifications regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland1 and is part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Its Qualification Accreditation Number is 100/1433/0. This qualification is therefore fundable under the Learning and Skills Act 2000 under Sections 96 and 97. Its Learning Aim Code is 10014330

Assessment requirements: Internally assessed portfolio of evidence

The qualification consists of 3 mandatory units:

Unit 01: Number

In this unit learners will use numbers up to 10 (including zero), and perform simple additions and subtractions. Learners will show an understanding of the purpose of numbers, measures, objects or pictures.

Unit 02 Measures, shape and space

In this unit learners will use measures, shape and space to recognise familiar objects and events, including money, time, size and weight.

Unit 03 Handling data

In this unit learners will extract, sort and present information from lists.

To be awarded the NCFE Entry Level Certificate in Adult Numeracy learners are required to successfully complete all 3 mandatory units.

Accreditation and Certification End Dates

All qualifications on the NQF have accreditation and certification end dates which are set by the regulators to ensure that they remain current and valid. Learner registrations may not be accepted by NCFE after the accreditation end date for a specific qualification if an extension to the accreditation is not obtained from the regulators. However, certification is allowed until the certification end date so that learners have time to complete any programme of study.

Towards the end of the accreditation period for a qualification, NCFE will undertake a review of the qualification. This will be done in collaboration with sector representatives in order to make any changes necessary to meet sector needs and reflect recent developments.

Aims and Objectives

The NCFE Entry Level Certificate in Adult Numeracy aims to provide a framework for the development and assessment of the numeracy skills, knowledge and understanding that an adult will need to function at work and in society in general. The qualification is designed to assess achievement in relation to the National Adult Numeracy Standards at Entry Level.

The objectives of the NCFE Entry Level Certificate in Adult Numeracy in order to meet its aim are to:

-provide an accreditation framework that is flexible, rigorous and relevant

-provide opportunities for learners to develop and improve their numeracy skills in appropriate contexts

-prompt Teachers, agencies and organisations into providing a wider range of learning opportunities and activities to learners

-support national initiatives in basic skills, inclusive learning and widening participation

Progression Opportunities

The Entry Certificate in Adult Numeracy aims to develop learners' skills both laterally and incrementally. Learners are able to develop essential, transferable skills in a context relevant to themselves in their own time and at their own pace.
