WHY TAKE THE ASDAN TEACHING AWARD?
This programme has been specifically designed for A Level students who are interested in primary teaching. It provides a link between academic study and practical vocational skills. You must have an interest in primary teaching. You need to be well motivated and hard working in order to complete your portfolio of work. Asdan is a one year programme studied alongside your subjects in your first year at College, which should include at least one National Curriculum subject.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
The key areas of study will be the primary curriculum, including literacy and numeracy strategies and the foundation stage curriculum. The course also covers a range of educational issues such as discipline and multi-cultural education. Time will be spent developing skills that are required by teachers such as working as part of a team, planning and organising activities and outings, presentations, research skills and career planning.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will need good communication and presentation skills, good time management and good organisation skills. You will also develop effective research and observational skills and acquire an understanding of confidentiality whilst enhancing your commitment to equality of opportunity.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will attend a local primary school one afternoon per week where you will plan and carry out activities. Reports will be completed by the class teacher. You will prepare a portfolio which is divided into six sections for work experience, problem solving, research, presentation, discussion and working with others which includes team work. You will also take part in class debates and discussions and complete the Certificate in Effective Practice Student Book.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
You will have the opportunity to participate in the planning, organising and implementation of a trip or visit of your choice.
