There is no entry requirement for this programme, however, it is strongly recommended that candidates complete the IOSH Managing Safely programme first as this increases their chance of success.

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
Course summary:
The course is normally run over 23 weeks. For start dates in September and November classes are held on a Monday and Tuesday evening 6.00pm - 8.00pm or Friday 1.00pm-5.00pm.

Course content:
The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health Certificate is approximately 23 week programme suitable if you wish to pursue a career in safety and health.
The National General Certificate comprises three parts:
NGC1:
Management of Health and Safety which comprises:-
* Methods of Assessing and Controlling Risks
* Effective Communication
* Investigation and reporting of Accidents
* Compliance with General Legislation.
NGC2:
Controlling Workplace Hazards which includes:-
* Hazards and safe systems of work
* Fire Prevention Measures
* Controlling Health Hazards.
NGC3:
The Practical Assessment which comprises Inspections of Workplaces.
The methods used for programme delivery ensure a good stimulus to learning and include the use of videos, guest speakers, different tutors and relation to the personal experiences of course members.
It is possible to combine this course with a management development programme. If you are considering entering employment where there is a responsibility for health and safety it may be advisable to acquire a knowledge of management principles and practices and to develop essential communication and problem solving skills.

Assessment procedure:
Assessment for this formal qualification is by 2 x 2 hour formal examination and a practical inspection assessment. The Practical assessment will generally take place the week following the examinations.

The NEBOSH General Certificate is the standard requirement for entry to the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or Foundation Degree in Occupational Health & Safety.
