Introduction

Image of WheelsThe Machinery Directive (Supply of machinery (safety) Regulations) which regulates the safety of all machinery and lifting equipment sold within the European Economic Area is changing significantly from 29th December 2009. On this date the current Machinery Directive 98/37/EC ends and the new Directive 2006/42/EC begins without any transition period. The new Directive incorporates significant changes to the scope and the essential health and safety requirements and now has an explicit requirement for manufacturers to carry out risk assessment and new requirements for documentation and Declarations of Conformity. In addition to a wide range of changes to the Directive, many of the key standards which support the legislation have been amended and in the case of the standard for safety related parts of control circuits, radically altered.
