A practical workshop for capable players - brass melody, harmony and bass lines - giving you experience of playing in a New Orleans style brass band. Play traditional and modern New Orleans music. Emphasis on developing sight reading, learning by ear, improvising, good rhythm and feel.

About this course

Play through sample pieces that typify this musical style.
Learn about the history of New Orleans brass band music.
Learn to read chord charts and lead sheets.
Learn tunes by ear and memorise them.
Perform as an ensemble, take solos.

Bring any instrument in the brass family : trumpet, trombone, french horn, flugelhorn, cornet, tenor/baritone horn, euphonium, tuba.

Course programme

History and context of New Orleans brass band culture and music.
Play a variety of examples of traditional and modern brass band repertoire.
Learn about existing ensembles and play some of their music.
Learn elements such as call & response, 'filling in' lines, and backings.

Mostly we will play, with and without sheet music, with guidance and demonstration from the tutor - on style, approaches to improvising, listening and responding to other players.
