ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will have met the following entry requirements:
GCSE - English grade D, Maths, Science, IT/other grade A-E.
Minimum Initial Assessment: Literacy Entry Level 3 and Numeracy Entry Level 3
Entry Level Certificate in Hairdressing;
Have good communication skills;
A satisfactory reference which will include information on behaviour, attendance and punctuality;
Commitment to the course;
Relevent work experience will be required for 5 days; and
have good manual dexterity skills (i.e. an ability to work well with their hands).
Starter kit if full kit is not available at the start of the course.
PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
This course is suitable for students who wish to develop the foundation skills in Hairdressing which are needed for a successful career within the industry. The course will involve both practical and theory classes. During the practical lessons, students will be working in a realistic salon environment and will be expected to carry out Hairdressing services on clients once they have reached a certain level of ability. The subjects students will study include: Develop Effective Working Relationships, Health and Safety, Prepare for Services and Maintain the Working Area, Salon Reception and Shampoo and Condition Hair. Students will also be required to complete four weeks work experience whilst on the course. During the practical lessons students will be working in a realistic salon environment and will be expected to carry out Hairdressing services on clients. As clients for all courses cannot be guaranteed, students may need to provide their own clients.


PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
On successful completion of this course students can progress onto NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or choose to find employment in the Hairdressing industry at junior level.

The progression criteria is:
Completion of Level 1 Hairdressing qualification
Completion of work experience with a positive reference
Maintain 80% attendance for a minimum of 2 terms


ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE This is gained through observed practical, oral and written assessment that will be onging throughout the duration of the programme. Students will be expected to collect relevant evidence through witness testimony projects and assignments towards their portfolio. If students are able to provide evidence of prior learning and experience this may be accredited to the qualification.
EXCURSIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE There will be a minimum of one subject related visit during the year which is part of your programme and therefore compulsory. 4 weeks of work experience within the programme. There will also be opportunities to enter competitions and it is expected that all students will take part in these activities.
READING LISTS Recommended text books to be advised during induction. A suitable lever arch file and paper with dividers will be needed.
