About this course

You will need at least 4 GCSEs in the A*-C range, preferably to include two at grade C or above or an appropriate Level 1 qualification such as a BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma
or a NVQ 1.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are qualifications that assess your ability to work to occupational standards. Once you have completed the NVQ you can be sure that employers will understand and value your qualification.

This course is designed to fast-track students with good entry GCSEs or past experience in hairdressing studies. As a fast-track student you will study in college three days a week and gain valuable work experience in a salon for two days a week.

You will need to complete nine units, eight core units and one optional unit selected by the College.

The core units are:

· Cut hair using basic techniques
· Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
· Style, dress and finish hair using basic techniques
· Change hair colour using basic techniques
· Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
· Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
· Advise and consult with clients
· Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques.

The one optional unit is selected by the College from the following:

· Fulfil salon reception duties
· Provide scalp massage services
· Promote additional products or services to clients.

You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications
alongside your main course. These will include qualifications in Functional Skills and can also include more specialist awards that are relevant to the subject you are studying.

How will I be assessed?
Assessments are carried out through practical skills tests, online testing, observations while you are working and completed assignments and projects. You will be able to test your practical skills and knowledge in our commercial salons and in the workplace.

Progression
On successful completion you may:

Progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing,
which combines employment and study in an exciting and challenging programme.

Or

Progress to further study in barbering, nail services or media make-up.

Or

Start an exciting and rewarding career, for example as a Stylist or Colourist in a hairdressing salon.

Achieving this qualification will give you the equivalent of
5 GCSEs at grades A*-C.
