Is it for me?
This course is aimed at candidates who wish for a career within the IT Industry and are aiming for professional certification in hardware.
The course is delivered through the Cisco Network Academy Program IT Essentials 1 sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and is a recognised qualification in the industry.

Where will I study?
Baltic Campus

You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.

What do I need?
You should have completed an Introductory course in PC Repair or have relevant work experience in the area of hardware. It is essential you have access to the Internet at home.

What will I study?
The course is accredited through OCR IT Practitioners (ICT System Support) Level 2 and will cover the following Topics.
  • PC Hardware and Software
  • Building a Computer
  • Installation of the motherboard, Floppy and Hard Drives, CD-Rom and video cards
  • Installing and managing Windows operating systems
  • Adding peripherals and multimedia capabilities
  • Knowledge on Local Area Networks architecture, networking protocols
  • OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) Model, and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) utilities
  • Connecting computers to a Local Area Network and the Internet
  • Troubleshooting Hardware and Software
Assessment
Your course: Continuous assessment is a key part of this course, your progress will be assessed throughout delivery. You will complete a final online exam at the end of the course.

How will I be taught?
You will be taught using a range of techniques including Lectures, Practical Labs, Quizzes and discussions. You will also have access to course materials through the CISCO website via the College VLE, Blackboard.

What Qualification will I get?
You will gain unit certification towards OCRs Certificate for IT Practitioners (ICT System Support) at Level 2
You may also wish to sit the CompTIA A+ Exams 220-301 A+ Hardware and 220-302 A+ OS Technologies. These exams are administered through Thompson Prometric or Pearson VUE.

Can I go into further study?
Candidates who complete the Level 2 qualification have the following opportunities for progression:

  • NVQ for IT Practitioners
