Course content:
This course is taught by a professional cake decorator. Learn how to create simple modern designs suitable for a beginner including coating, drapes, cutter designs, sugar pearls and feature flowers. Expert advice on presentation, stacking, tiering and transporting. You may visit an exhibition. You will not learn to bake cakes. You will work on dummies or your own cakes.
By the end of the course you will know:
- How to choose and use tools and equipment
- How to make a range of pastes for fabric effects
- How to marzipan and sugarpaste
- Simple piping techniques
- Proportion and balance in design
- Global, historical and cultural backgrounds to subject
-Compiling a personal reference file
Course Structure:
You will agree a course outline. Each week the lesson will consist of mini lecture, demonstrations, small group, individual practical work on samples. There is an emphasis on student research, peer sharing of ideas and practice at home is encouraged.
Course resources:
You will have access to the learning centre at Tooting which has a good selection of reference magazines and books. The teacher has a library of design ideas and samples.
Assessment:
Tutor observation and feedback. Individual Learning Plans. Student and peer self assessment. Course file appraisal

When information is available you will notice 2 different fees stated for this course. The fee you pay is dependent on your status:
Fee 1: Standard fee;
Fee 2: Aged 60+ years fee
Students in receipt of an income-based benefit pay £20 per course per term.
You will need to bring proof of age and any benefits when you enrol.
You DO NOT have to pay a college registration fee for these courses, but you may have to pay for additional course materials.Materials costs:
You will pay for dummies, boxes, icings from the tutor and provide your own equipment and tools as needed. You need an apron and tea towel each week and an A4 folder
