Summary:
NVQs are nationally recognised awards. The courses are designed for those working as home care assistants, community support assistants, health care assistants, residential or day service assistants.
Level 2 offers a generic pathway (Adults, Children and Young People.
Level 3 offers separate pathways (Adults or Children and Young People) dependant on where you are working.
Level 3 qualifications are particularly relevant to senior care workers, health care workers, home care organisers and community support workers. Specialist units are available for drugs and mental health workers, residential child care workers, foster carers as well as workers in health, youth justice and educational settings. Those working in a hospital also have the option of the NVQ Health pathway. Optional units will be specific to their roles and responsibilities within the ward that they are employed in.
Course Length:
12 - 18 months - attendance is flexible to meet your individual needs. More information will be available at induction. Start dates in September, January and April, with further dates subject to demand.
Entry Requirements:
Relevant paid or voluntary work for a minimum of 9 hours a week, which allows you to demonstrate the appropriate skills.
At Level 2 you are likely to be working under the supervision of an experienced and qualified professional and can be in voluntary or paid employment.
Level 3 candidates are generally working independently within a community setting or at supervisory level, though may not have the relevant qualifications. Level 4 candidates are working in management positions. At level 3 and 4 it is essential to be in paid employment.
Assessment:
On completion of your course you will be able to progresws to the next NVQ Level. On completion of Level 3 you will be able to progress to a Foundation Degree. Similarly from Level 4 you will be able to progress to a course at higher education level.
Career Progression:
You will be allocated 24 hours of assessment time by City College and will need to work within this framework in order to maximise support. NVQ assessors will observe your achievements and skills in your workplace and you will collect a portfolio of evidence for assessment. There are no examinations.
