Course aims:
Do you make jewellery, but feel you would like to develop your skills a little more? Want to learn new techniques, or perfect the ones you know? Then this could be the course for you.
The NCFE Level 2 Jewellery course is aimed at students with some previous jewellery making experience (in metal), or those who have completed Level 1.
Students will continue to perfect their existing skills, increasing their confidence in basic techniques, so more complex projects can be undertaken. Initial projects will be directed at soldering and sawing skills, to ensure all students are fully competent in these vital skills.
The course will introduce students to new techniques and ideas, which will develop their already existing array of skills. There will be opportunity to use the colleges etching facilities, use alternative materials, basic stone setting and lost wax casting. Emphasis is placed on design and independent working. Students should expect to be actively involved in their learning and development. As this is an intermediate course, students will be given greater freedom to develop their own designs and pursue techniques of particular interest.

Course content:
On this course you will learn about:
  • advanced piecing and soldering skills
  • practicing your piecing skills
  • improving your soldering technique
  • how to inlay metal.
  • etching and bezel setting
  • lost wax casting
  • handmade findings
  • using alternative materials
  • advanced design techniques.


Facilities for students:
  • Use of the main workshop and tools.
  • Tools include, bench drill, pendent drills, band saw, sander and polishing machine.
  • Specialist tools include soldering torches, disc cutters, mandrels, carving tools, stone setting tools, etching equipment.
  • General Tools include files, shears, hammers, punches.


Tutors:
Liz Webster has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, majoring in Jewellery and Metalworking. For the past few years she has worked within the field of contemporary jewellery, initially as an employee, then in her own business, designing and making limited production jewellery.
She has an extensive knowledge of other jewellery makers and has worked for the Crafts Council, mentoring designer makers. She has taught the Jewellery making course at City College Brighton and Hove for the past two years.

Assessment: You will be asked to complete coursework and students will complete three set assignments.

Entry Requirements:
Previous experience of jewellery making (in metal) or NCFE Level 1.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
General research on contemporary jewellery makers.

Progression and links:
Students can progress on to other art and design courses.
Students can use the NCFE Level 2 to show future employers their interest and determination to become jewellers.
Many jewellers are self employed, and the majority of students interested in becoming jewellers follow this route.

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
