NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing (for unqualified plumbers)
Course Details
This scheme is for learners who are over 25 years old, employed in the plumbing industry as plumbers or plumbers mate but have not got formal plumbing qualification. The aim of the scheme is to provide knowledge and skill in plumbing systems and installation so that you can successfully obtain the City and Guilds 6089 NVQ level 2. The cost for this scheme has still to be determined, however it is most likely to be based on individual need and agreement at the interview stage. All applications for this scheme must be addressed to Ron Pashley, Curriculum Leader. This scheme requires sufficient 'on-site' or workplace evidence supported by accredited assessor testimonials. After an initial induction (to be held at Hull College) the candidate will carry out plumbing tasks as per the scheme (City and Guilds) requirements. These tasks will be verified by a work-based recorder and some tasks will be assessed by the College employed, work-based assessor. At level 2 the tasks inlcude: hot and cold water systems, central heating and sanitation, sheet lead flashings to chimneys and pipes. Evidence has to be gathered to show competent use of copper, plastic and steel pipe, as well as sheet lead. It is expected that the candidate will have sufficient knowledge to pass all written assignments and the final exam. If knowledge is proven to be insufficient then the candidate must be prepared to enrol on the Level 2 Technical Certificate course as an additional course of study (see Plumbing Technical Certificate and NVQ 2 and 3). Assessment: The NVQ is assessed in the workplace' by College work based assessor staff. This element of the qualification cannot be conducted in College therefore employers, learners and managing agents must find opportunities for the learner/candidate so that he/she can provide the competence evidence required. The candidate is required to build a portfolio of workplace evidence before an application for the NVQ award can be made. There will be a need to attend College to sit the 11 (eleven) written assessments and one computerised end examination.
Qualifications required:
1. Must be over 25 years of age on the September enrolment date. 2. Attend an interview with the course tutor, where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the scheme and its requirements. The scheme conditions will be explained in detail. You need to be ready to accept these conditions that relate to safety and commitment to building a portfolio of evidence. 3. Have full time employment with a plumbing company that carries out domestic installations and can provide opportunities for the evidence required by the scheme. It is crucially important that the employer agrees to the conditions of the scheme. 4. You must have at least 5 years continuous full time plumbing industry experience. 5. The final decision about eligibility for entry to the scheme will rest with the scheme tutor/co-ordinator.
Course length:
The duration of the scheme will depend upon the candidate's work schedule and opportunity for gathering the precise evidence required. However it is anticipated that one academic year (September to July) should be sufficient.
Venue:
The College's Queen's Gardens Site
Start Date:
September
Course hours:
Initially there will be a one-evening induction to the scheme, then attendance for written assignments/tests and the final examination. There will be a need to attend College for formal scheme reviews arranged by the work-based assessor and course tutor. It may be determined at the application interview and by the scheme action plan, that some parts of the scheme require formal training and in-college assessment.
