Course Content: This course is for learners who wish to gain knowledge of oil painting and develop their own style. The course will offer a pleasant progression through various techniques, approaches and styles in a 'hands on' manner with lots of help, examples, demonstrations, ideas and much enthusiastic support. Learners may start in terms A, B or C Term A: Learners will receive an introduction to still life and 'en plein air' and how to prepare effectively for painting. They will develop a knowledge of materials and methods including sketching with the brush and colour mixing with the three primaries as well as one-to-one compositional advice from the tutor. Term B: Learners will continue painting 'en plein air' and explore painting interiors. Weather permitting, learners will be able to experiment with alla- prima painting outside. Other techniques explored during this term include; colour perspective, expressive brush work, thick and thin, 'rubbing out' method, proportion, angles and fore- shortening. Term C: Learners will have the opportunity to compare different painting methods reinforcing previous work. They will also be able to experiment with dry brush, scumbling and glazing and the use of a painting knife to create texture and effect. Lecturer uses the spiral curriculum model and tailors the approach and techniques to suit learners ability, progress, age etc. Learners work at their own pace and topics are arranged to enable beginner and intermediate alike to have the maximum opportunity to achieve.

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be tested through observation, presentation and lecturer feedback.
