PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
What can I expect on the course?
These courses are accredited by ILEX (Institute of Legal Executives) and you will cover a similar syllabus to a university
Law course. These qualifications are recognised as satisfying the entry requirements for the professional stage of training for a career as a legal executive. It takes approximately four
years to qualify as a legal executive.

How is the course structured?
The ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law (examination route) is modular in structure with four modules (Law1 and 2,
Practice 1 and 2) studied over two years. You will study for four hours on one evening a week which allows you the
flexibility of being able to earn while you learn.

The ILEX Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law requires study of three substantive law modules and one specialist procedural paper. You will study two modules a year during the day or evening for two hours a week.

How will I be assessed?
End of year examinations take place in late May and early June and are externally set and marked by ILEX. Your tutors will give you the opportunity to submit coursework and take in-class
assessments throughout the year so that you can monitor your progress. Successful completion of the ILEX qualification
at Level 3 and Level 6 completes the academic stage of training to become a qualified legal executive.

What are the career opportunities?
The Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) offers an alternative route to a career in Law without having to study at university.
ILEX is one of the three officially recognised routes to becoming a lawyer and offers a cost-effective way of gaining
the key qualifications needed for a career in law.

Legal executives are qualified lawyers who work alongside solicitors and barristers and specialise in a particular
area of law. They can: handle various legal aspects of a property transfer; assist in the formation of a company;
be involved in actions in the High Court or county courts; draft wills; advise clients accused of serious or petty crime
or families with matrimonial problems; and assist with many other matters affecting people in their domestic and
business affairs. Legal executives are fee earners in private practice their work is charged directly to clients making
a direct contribution to the income of a law firm. This is an important difference between legal executives and other types
of legal support staff who tend to handle work of a more routine nature.

The ILEX Professional Examination courses are suitable for those working or wishing to work within a legal practice or a legal
department and who want to train and qualify as a legal executive. Legal executives are qualified lawyers often
specialising in a particular area of law, and their day-to-day work is similar to that of a solicitor.

At Level 3 (Professional Diploma in Law),you will cover a range of law subjects including land law, family law, employment law, criminal law, contract and consumer law and the law of tort.
The practice modules will place the law in a practical context.
The Level 6 (Professional Higher Diploma in Law) requires specialist study in three law papers and one practice paper
which will enable you to develop the skills of legal analysis. Most ILEX Level 6 classes are offered both in the day and
in the evening.
