Course Overview Learners will gain the basic techniques and skills to prepare and finish leather for simple repairs or projects. Learners need to bring the following to the first class: essential - pen and paper, optional - any leather working tools they may have.

Qualification gained: This course does not lead to a qualification

Course Content: Learners will acquire the basic techniques of working with leather in order to undertake repair work and will also receive individual guidance for the making and repairing of bridlework or associated projects. The course is designed to introduce learners to the basic techniques and skills of cutting, preparation and stitching leather in order to undertake simple repairs or projects. Term 1: Health & Safety, leather preparation, stitching, types of leather, leather working tools, practical exercises. Term 2: Health & Safety, dyes and stains, threads, keepers, studs and rivets, bridles and head collars, individual projects. Term 3: Health & Safety, girths, saddles, individual projects

Work Experience: Learners do not need to be in relevant work to undertake this course.

Course Assessment: Progress on this course will be assessed through gapped handouts, quizzes or informal tests, observation and lecturer feedback.

Progression: Learners can progress to other saddlery and leatherwork courses including qualifications courses (eg City & Guilds), and saddlery apprenticeships.

Homework: Learners will benefit from undertaking home study (e.g. working on projects) of approximately 2-4 hours per week.

Additional Costs: In January there may be visits to BETA, the Royal Mews. Transport costs will be dependent on student numbers.
