Overview
This PG Diploma is designed to accelerate surgical training and improve surgical skills that are essential for building confidence in clinical practice. The programme offers the opportunity to develop, or extend, expertise in the established and rapidly developing areas of laparoscopic surgery and bowel anastomosis.
The course will provide students with a unique opportunity to practice and perfect the laparoscopic technical skills necessary to meet the standards set by The Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland for obtaining LapPass – “The Laparoscopic Passport”.
As well as practical skills, you will gain a clear understanding of the research process, including research design, methodology, analysis, and presentation of work for publication.
Theory and skills demonstrations will be delivered via QMUL’s virtual learning platform. You will receive a take-home box simulator with instruments, sutures and practice jigs to enable regular skills practice.
This programme will:
Teach you basic and advanced laparoscopy tasks
Give you skills in laparoscopic suturing
Teach you how to perform bowel anastomosis
Give you the tools and methodologies for conducting research.

Course programme

Structure

The distance learning PG Diploma Laparoscopic Surgical Skills is available as a part time programme, taught over 2 years.

All teaching will be delivered via the University’s online learning platform with equipment provided to enable skills practice.
An optional summer school will be offered annually.

Compulsory modules
  • Laparoscopic Skills (15 credits)
  • Laparoscopic Suturing Skills (30 credits)
  • Laparoscopy Procedure Skills (15 credits)
  • Bowel Anastomosis Skills (30 credits)
  • Research Methods (30 credits)

Each 15 credit module will have approximately 30 hours of contact time and will require 120 hours of self-study.

Each 30 credit module will have approximately 60 hours of contact time and will require 240 hours of self-study.

Self-study includes practise time and time spent working on assignments.
