Course programme
This course aims to equip participants with the skills to evaluate, assess and interact appropriately by either physical or non-physical means, when dealing with an affray or potentially violent situation and/or an aggressive or violent individual within a ward or clinical setting. Participants will learn how to intervene using structured verbal and physical means whilst maintaining a professional, dignified and client centred approach.
This course will employ a variety of techniques and strategies for the control of violent situations as well as the need to use all alternatives to physical interventions where possible. Areas covered will also include planned and unplanned interventions, structured roles and responsibilities of team members, the co-ordination and direction of the Physical Intervention Team, the role of the Incident Supervisor, appropriate communication and interaction skills during interventions and the importance of a professional client centred approach, attitude and self control. A theoretical underpinning will run through the course and presentations and group work exercise will also encompass the importance of professional accountability, legal implications and considerations, the risks associated with restraint and appropriate post incident responsibilities and reporting strategies.
