You will acquire a more solid technique and gain confidence across a wider repertoire. Emphasis will be given to improving legato playing and quality of ‘singing tone’ as well as balance between hands.
If you are unsure which course is best for you, please come to an advice session and bring a piece to play. Our teachers will help you select a class at the right level.

About this course
- Recognise and play perfect, imperfect and interrupted cadences
- Recognise and understand modulation
- Make decisions about the shaping of phrases
- Perform ornaments clearly and smoothly
- Co-ordinate pedalling smoothly with playing.
Students should have access to a keyboard or piano for practice between classes. Approximately £15 per term for music being studied. It is often possible to borrow from public libraries.
You will be taught through individual performances, group work, pair work, tutor demonstration, constructive criticism and discussion. You will be expected to practice at least 50 minutes a day.

- The choice of repertoire will include two - three composers and a selection of studies
- Technical problems, style and performance skills will be discussed
- There will some sight reading pieces
- There may be opportunity to play duets.
- Course repertoire will be of a grade 3/4 standard (increasing in complexity with tutor guidance)
- Scales: C, G, F, D, A, E and B majors; A, E, D, B, C and F minors (harmonic and melodic, 2 octave hands together). Arpeggios in those keys (1 octave hands together, 2 octaves hands separately).
