About this course

Applicants will need three GCSEs at Grade C or above (including Maths and Science) to start directly on this course.However, with at least 3 GCSE's at Grade D applicants would start on the Pre-Apprenticeship at Level 1 and then progress onto this course.Mature learners returning to Further Education would be accepted subject to a successful interview.

What are the Course Details?
This course is for young people who want a career as a Maintenance Electrician. Learners will get the skills and knowledge needed so they will be ready to start an Advanced Apprenticeship.

The course provides an ideal starting point for learners who are keen to progress into employment in the field of electrical maintenance where many varied opportunities exist.


What will I Learn?
The training is a part of the requirements for an Advanced Apprenticeship Framework in Engineering which covers:
NVQ2 Performing Engineering Operations (Practical) with the following units:

Mandatory Training
Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering
Using and Communicating Technical Information

Electrical Training
Wiring and Testing Electrical Equipment and Circuits
Electrical Panel Wiring
Maintaining Electrical Systems and Devices

Learners will also study either the BTEC National Certificate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Level 3) OR the EAL Intermediate Certificate in Engineering.

In addition, learners will also be expected to undertake Functional Skills which may include IT, Maths and English.


How will I Learn?
This course has a substantial practical emphasis with one full day and evening of academic study on either the BTEC National Certificate or the EAL Intermediate Certificate in Engineering.

The course is delivered by staff who possess both professional and educational qualifications. Staff also have a wealth of industrial experience gained from employment that enables them to relate theory to practice. As part of the course you will undertake both assignments and practical activities.

A wide range of materials, including photocopied notes and books are made available during guided learning periods and the College has open access library and computer facilities. Learners must provide their own files, writing paper, materials, drawing instruments, and scientific calculator. (Overalls and safety boots may be required.)


How will I be Assessed?
The course consists predominantly of on-going assessments and portfolio building. The EAL Certificate in Engineering has course work and multi-choice tests.

The BTEC National Certificate is assessed through a series of assignment work.


What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.


Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.


Is there any Work Experience?
There will be the possibility of a work placement in an industrial environment.


What can I Progress to?
Successful completion of the course will provide the opportunity to progress to employment and a further two years training to complete the Advanced Apprenticeship Framework. There may be the opportunity to continue onto Higher Education in Engineering such as a Higher National Certificate or a Degree.
