This is a beginners course which will enable you to read basic Sanskrit in the Devanagari script.
Classroom contact with interactions in both Sanskrit and English. To fully benefit from the course, you should be
prepared to commit at least 3-4 hours to homework.

About this course

Construct and read simple sentences in the present tense. You will also be exposed to popular shlokas in Sanskrit.

Course programme

The alphabet in transliteration and the Devanagari script; sandhi (vowel and consonant liaison at word borders);
commonly used noun declensions; most important verb conjugations.

Bring a notepad and a pen/pencil. Book links will be provided, and a cursive writing book recommended at a nominal cost. Neither are compulsory. You can enrol for module 2, in which you will expand your vocabulary dramatically, learn complex grammatical forms, the past and future tense, the passive voice, and be able to read prose passages appropriate to this level.
