About this course

Students should be aged 19 or over and have at least one of the following: a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject. an Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject. at least four GCSEs at grades A* to C. appropriate work experience. All students will be interviewed to assess their eligibility for the course.

Introduction:
A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course valued by employers and higher education institutions. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about science, you will also develop the skills needed to start, or progress a career in this industry. This course is equivalent to two A Levels.

Study Mode & Location:
This course can be studied over two years as a part-time course, or as a Part-Time+ course over 34 weeks. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
This course is made up of 12 units - five are core and seven are specialist. The specialist units enable you to study one of three particular areas in depth, namely:

Assessment:
All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
A BTEC National Certificate prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding for progression to a more advanced course such as an HNC, HND or BA Honours Degree in a variety of science subjects. Employment opportunities exist in a range of areas and may include working in:

  • a pharmaceuticals research laboratory.
  • a hospital laboratory.
  • a forensic science laboratory.
  • an environmental science laboratory.
  • a materials testing laboratory in the construction, paper or plastics industry.

Part-Time+ Route
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time Only Route
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.

Depending upon your circumstances, you may be able to study for FREE or at a reduced price.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits
Part-Time+ courses are ideal if you are looking to return to education, change career or progress to higher level studies. Courses last between 11 and 18 hours per week, for a full year and fit in with school hours and holidays. They offer:
