Working from a simple pattern, learn how to make a classic shirt. You will be guided step by step through taking your measurements, choosing the right pattern size, laying out your pattern pieces and cutting out the fabric. You will learn sewing techniques such as contour darts, buttonholes, sleeves & collars to produce the shirt in a fabric of your choice. There is a pattern for both mens and womenswear styles. You must be able to use a sewing machine to participate in this course.

- Use the sewing machine.- Sew seams- Sew single and double (contour) darts- Create buttonholes.- Sew in a short sleeve- Prepare and attach a collar- Sew a Curved machine hems.- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference.- Press and finish samples.
Please bring 1.5 metres of a medium weight non-stretch fabric, suitable for making shirts. The fabric will be needed in week 2, so you will also have the opportunity to discuss your requirements with the tutor.Bring a notebook and pen to keep your notes in and a small folder or plastic sleeve for any hand outs. All equipment is provided. Fabric for samples and practising etc will be supplied.
Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice, one to one instruction and guidance. Some tasks may need to be undertaken at home in order to be completed.

Course programme
With individual use of a Bernina sewing machine, the tutor will guide you through the basic sewing techniques used in making up a shirt. You’ll develop skills in sewing seams and pressing them using professional techniques, single and double (contour) darts, buttonholes, pockets, sleeves and collars. Pressing and finishing will be covered. You will have the opportunity to practise on samples and to make up a shirt within the class, using techniques learnt.

You can attend another intermediate project based course such as Fashion: garment construction for improvers to learn new techniques or move on to an advanced sewing course such as VX342 Sewing on Sundays: advanced or VX347 Fashion: advanced sewing skills.
There are also courses in textiles in which you could learn how to embroider, knit, or print as techniques which could be used to embellish garments and fashion courses such as VX311 Introduction to fashion sketchbook.
