Course programme

This qualifcation can be used as evidence of the language skills needed in order to operate independently and at an advanced level in the target language, and is useful for those who work with deaf people.
Candidates for this qualification must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3 of the National Language Standards. This means that they will be able to understand and express information, ideas and opinions about a variety of subjects, and deal with a range of work tasks.

The assessment of Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language uses the National Language Standards at Level 3. it also reflects the performance descriptors for Modern Foreign Language and English at AS and A2 level. The qualification is at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), Advance Level on the Language Ladder(LL)and Level B2 on the Common European Framework(CEF).
The qualification is divided into 2 units, each of which can be achieved seperately.

Unit BSL301 is the receptive unit, and Unit BSL302 is the productive unit. Candidates will provide evidence for both units of their ability to use BSL by compiling a portfolio of evidence drawn from the themes of study. Both units are internally assessed by the centre and quality assurance is provided by Signature.

Candidates are required to achieve both units for full Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language.

Students will be able to·Demonstrate BSL competence at an advanced level
·Broaden and supply BSL skills required in a range of situations (communication, discussion, debate, presentation skills, etc) and contexts (socially, in the workplace, through the media, etc)
·Demonstrate an understanding of BSL from a variety of registers in different situations with different people
·Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in BSL using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language
·Demonstrate increased knowledge of the grammatical structure and variation within BSL
·Demonstrate positive attitudes and sensitivity to language and language learning
·Demonstrate insights into and contact with the Deaf Community

Course Content
Themes -
The qualification content covers 5 themes. In order to develop a suitable range of vocabulary for this level, all learners must study 2 mandatory units: Theme 1, which provides evidence for the Knowledge and Skills requirement of the qualification and Theme 2 - 'Society'. Candidates will then study 1 optional theme from a choice of 'Education', 'Health' or 'The Workplace'.

BSL301- BSL Receptive Skills

Receptive Skills relating to issues and concerns in social or work-related contexts, including following uncomplicated negotiations and understanding the main point of interviews, documentaries and most social conversation.

BSL302- BSL Productive Skills

Productive skills relating to issues and concerns in social or work-related contexts, including following uncomplicated negotiations, exchanging and presenting information.
