Skills for Life Literacy Skills Development
INTRODUCTION
Skills for Life Literacy courses will improve skills, knowledge and understanding that you need for everyday life, for your other studies and in the work place.
All students at Gateway College who have not yet attained a D grade in GCSE English must follow Skills for Life English course along with their main programme of study.
WHAT LEVEL OF COURSE WILL I STUDY?
There are two levels of courses: Foundation and Intermediate . At the beginning of the year you will be placed on the appropriate level of course depending on your GCSE results and/or an assessment. Each course is expected to last one year.
HOW WILL I STUDY?
You will have 4 hours of English each week with a group of students studying at the same level. Your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will help you understand the skills you need to work on. You will have opportunity to discuss this regularly with your teacher.
WHAT WILL I STUDY
The main areas covered in the courses are:
- Reading and understanding different types of text
- Writing for a range of purposes
- Spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Developing speaking and listening skills
ASSESSMENT
The course are split into topic based unites and you will be assessed on all of your literacy skills so that you can see how well you are progressing.
At the end of your course you will be able to sit the Adult Literacy test at Level 1 0r Level 2. This is a national test and can be taken on line or as a paper based exam.
